About this stone
Builders Grade is the same Flint Hills limestone as our premium block, pulled from the same ledge, but with more variation in bed depth and face. It is the right pick when the wall is doing a job — holding back a slope, terracing a lot, lining a drive — and the budget matters more than a gallery finish.
Blocks run 14 inches tall with beds from 10 to 30 inches and lengths from 2 to 7 feet. Expect a rough-cut, natural look with real dimensional variation. Each block weighs roughly 800 to 2,000 pounds and sets with a skid steer with forks or an excavator with a thumb.
Every block still comes out of the ground mechanically, never blasted, so the stone itself is as sound as the premium grade: 12,820 PSI compressive strength and 0.3% absorption.
Best uses
- Retaining walls where cost matters
- Terracing and grade changes
- Farm, ranch and acreage walls
- Erosion control with a finished look

Questions about Builders Grade
How is Builders Grade different from Premium?
Same stone, less sorting. Builders Grade has wider bed-depth variation (10–30" vs 18–24") and a rougher face. Premium is hand-selected for consistent beds and clean faces. Strength and durability are identical.
How much wall does a ton build?
About 6.5 square feet of wall face per ton. A 24-ton load covers roughly 150 square feet of face — a wall 3 feet tall and 50 feet long.
