A family quarry in the Flint Hills.
Sunset Stone Company quarries limestone on Wells Creek Road outside Wamego, Kansas, and mills it at our own processing yard. We sell the stone we cut, not stone we bought.
The ledge
The Flint Hills sit on some of the hardest limestone in the Midwest. Our ledge yields dense, tight-grained stone in two natural colors — a warm Natural Tan and a cooler Gray Horizon — that split cleanly to a natural face and hold a crisp edge when milled or sawn.
Tested, not talked about
Independent lab results on our stone: 12,820 PSI average compressive strength and 0.3% water absorption. That is dense enough for commercial retaining walls and tight enough to shrug off Kansas freeze-thaw winters. Test reports are available on request for engineered and municipal projects.
No blasting
We extract every block mechanically. Blasting is faster, but it drives shockwaves through the ledge and leaves microfractures inside the stone that only show up years later as spalling and splitting. Our stone leaves the ground the same way it went in — solid.
The yard
Milled and sawn stone is processed at our yard near Kansas City. Tops and bottoms are milled flat and parallel; ends are sawn square on request. The face is never touched — that's what makes it look like real quarried limestone instead of a manufactured block.
Who we sell to
Landscape contractors, masons, hardscape suppliers, municipalities and homeowners across the United States and Canada. Most of our customers are repeat contractors who order a few loads at a time, season after season.
