14" Premium Natural Tan retaining wall at a lakeside home

Building a lake shoreline wall with limestone

Permits first, rip rap at the water, walls up the slope, steps down to the dock, and a plan for getting a semi to a steep lot.

Start with the permit

Work at the water's edge usually needs approval before any stone is placed. At Lake of the Ozarks that means the lake's shoreline management program (Ameren Missouri). Many Tennessee lakes are managed by TVA or the Corps of Engineers, and lakes like Lake Hamilton and Lake Ouachita have their own rules. Check with the lake's managing authority before you order, so the stone isn't sitting while paperwork catches up.

Rip rap at the water line

Rip rap protects the bank where the water works on it. We sell sized rip rap, hand-picked to roughly 1' × 1' for a uniform look and easier placement, and non-sized random rip rap that costs less. About 50,000 tons is stockpiled at the quarry and ready to load, and it ships by the ~24-ton truckload. Dense Flint Hills limestone stands up to freeze-thaw and moving water.

Terrace walls up the slope

Lake lots are steep. 14" Premium or Sundown Ledge stone builds the terrace walls that turn a slope into usable yard. A wall on a lake slope is doing real structural work, so your wall designer or engineer sets the height, batter and drainage. We supply the stone and do the tonnage math with you.

Steps and landings to the water

One-piece limestone steps make a path down the bank. Quarry slabs up to 12' long make landings, benches and small creek crossings near the shoreline.

Plan the truck before you order

A loaded semi needs a firm place to park and turn. Many lake roads are narrow and steep, so tell us about access when you ask for a quote. We'll plan where the truck can set up and what machine you'll need to move stone down the lot. Every stone has to come down the hill, so plan the staging spot and the route to the water before delivery day.

Quick answers

Do I need a permit for shoreline rip rap?

Often, yes. Check with the lake's managing authority (for example Ameren Missouri at Lake of the Ozarks, or TVA or the Corps of Engineers on many Tennessee lakes) before you place stone at the water.

Do you install shoreline walls?

No. We supply and deliver stone only. We're glad to talk through tonnage, product choice and unloading with you or your contractor.
