12" Milled Gray Horizon limestone retaining wall

Freeze-thaw and Kansas limestone

Water gets in, freezes and pries stone apart, winter after winter. Here's what keeps a limestone wall sound.

Sunset Stone Company guide · Updated 2026-10-21

How freeze-thaw breaks stone

Water works its way into stone, freezes, and pries it apart. One cold snap won't do it. Winter after winter of freezing and thawing will, if the stone holds water or carries hidden cracks.

What matters: absorption

The less water a stone soaks up, the less there is to freeze inside it. Our quarry's wall stone tested at 0.3% water absorption in independent lab tests, with 12,820 PSI average compressive strength. Test reports are available on request for engineered and municipal work; see the spec sheet.

Lab values come from specific tested samples, not every load. Natural stone varies.

What matters: no hidden cracks

Many quarries use explosives to break rock loose. Blasting sends shockwaves through the whole ledge and can leave microfractures inside the stone. You can't see them on delivery day, but water finds them, freezes, and splits the stone years later. We extract every block mechanically instead, so no blast shockwaves run through our ledge.

Ask what the lab results cover

Flint Hills limestone is known for being dense and durable, but stone varies from ledge to ledge. Our published results (12,820 PSI, 0.3% absorption) are for wall stone from our Wamego quarry. For retaining walls, ask for the lab data on the stone you're actually buying.

Build for the winter

Sound stone is half of it. The other half is the wall itself: have taller walls designed by an engineer, who sets the height, batter and drainage for your site. We supply the stone and the lab data your designer needs.

Hard-winter markets we ship to

Kansas City, Omaha, Des Moines, Sioux Falls and Denver, plus anywhere else in the lower 48 and Canada.

Quick answers

What is your limestone's water absorption?

0.3% in independent lab tests on our quarry's wall stone, with 12,820 PSI average compressive strength. Reports are available on request.

Is your stone blasted?

No. We extract our wall stone mechanically, so no blast shockwaves run through the ledge and leave hidden microfractures.
