About this stone

Sundown Ledge is the same Flint Hills limestone as our Premium block, from the same Wamego ledge, but with more variation in bed depth and face. It is the right pick when the wall is doing a job — holding back a slope, terracing a lot, lining a drive, or walling the banks of a backyard creek bed — and the budget matters more than a gallery finish.

Blocks run 14 inches tall with beds from 10 to 30 inches and lengths from 2 to 7 feet. Expect a rough-cut, natural look with real dimensional variation. Each block weighs roughly 800 to 2,000 pounds and sets with a skid steer with forks or an excavator with a thumb.

Every block still comes out of the ground mechanically, never blasted, so the stone itself is as sound as the Premium grade: 12,820 PSI average compressive strength and 0.3% absorption in independent lab tests.

Best uses

  • Retaining walls where cost matters
  • Walls lining a backyard creek bed
  • Terracing and grade changes
  • Farm, ranch and acreage walls
  • Erosion control with a finished look

Sundown Ledge on the job

14" Sundown Ledge, Gray Horizon

Sundown Ledge also comes in Gray Horizon, the gray color from our quarry. Same 14" Flint Hills limestone, same varied beds and rough-cut face — in gray.

Why we mill

Our ledge sits on top of a shale bed. When we pull that ledge, some of that shale sticks to the bottom of the stone. You can scratch it off with equipment, but we take care of that work by milling the stone — reducing natural variance for clean horizontal lines and an easy install.

Sundown Ledge can be ordered single-sided milled (one bed planed flat, the other left natural) when you want a true bed for faster stacking without moving up to our full 12" milled ledge stone. See 12" Milled Ledge Stone for the double-sided finish.

Questions about Sundown Ledge

How is Sundown Ledge different from Premium?

Same stone, less sorting. Sundown Ledge has wider bed-depth variation (10–30" vs 18–24") and a rougher face. Premium is hand-selected for consistent beds and clean faces. The stone itself is the same.

How much wall does a ton build?

About 6.5 square feet of wall face per ton. A 24-ton load covers roughly 150 square feet of face — about a wall 3 feet tall and 50 feet long.
